We don’t have any of this yet, we can’t do these tests yet, we’re not wearing these cloths yet, but we can plan for it, we can research courses for it, we can register for it & we can book it in our calendars! (aka planning for our training) ❄️ Prepare yourself by taking an Avalanche Skills Training Course (AST) with your friends. @avalanchecanada provides a comprehensive range of valuable avalanche information, including a contact list of instructors-for-hire in your area who offer a two-day AST Level 1 course. ❄️ Want to learn about avalanche safety before your AST course starts up? Check out the Avalanche Canada online avalanche tutorial. This free online course won’t replace AST program field avalanche training, but it will teach you some basic avalanche first response skills in the meantime! Take the course and tell us what you think. . . . #avalancheawareness #training #snowsafety #backcountry #snow #ast #avalanchecanada #avcan #bcadventuresmart #yet #compressiontest #layers #instability #weaklayers #decisionmaking #prepare #tripplanning #calendar #plan #beprepared #bc #reduceincidents #sarprevention

What does September mean to you? For some it means all that training, physically and mentally, has the opportunity to pay off. . Hunting in BC’s backcountry brings with it inherent hazards, challenges and a huge responsibility that even the most seasoned hunter must acknowledge. . 📸 @eatwild . . . . #bcadventuresmart #huntbc #eatwild #elk #training #hunting #camo #heavy #tripplan #train #takeessentials #quad #atv #teamwork #sarprevention #surviveoutside #getinformed #safetyfirst #antlers #september #respectthemountain #rooseveltelk

A few dogs (& owners) have been rescued lately, thankfully @bcsarassoc have brought everyone to safety. . “Charlie🐾“ @teaamhems reminds all #K9 handlers to be prepared for their furry friends! Charlie’s a professional, she’s adventurous & “AdventureSmart”, check out her list of “essentials” & a few tips from her handler @_trauma_hawk . . 1. Light. She wears a headlight as a light collar. That way she has light & if I need it I can wear it & lead us. I carry an awesome flashlight. 2. Signalling device- we use a fox 40 whistle & of course, Charlie can bark!!! 3. Fire starter-We have a lighter. It’s small & works well. First aid supply’s wrappers can start a fire in a pinch. 4. Warm clothes- I carry a couple foil blankets to stay dry & warm in an emergency. Charlie has a lot of fur otherwise & keeps me warm if I need it. 5. Pocket knife- we have a Smith & Wesson tactical knife we love to carry! 6. Shelter- a bothy bag or a big plastic garbage bag works well! 7. Food & water! Some high protein treats & of course water is critical/ I also pack dog friendly food in MY pack so we can share if we had to. 8. First aid kit- well, as a paramedic I go a little overboard here. I carry a compact version of what a paramedic would carry on the ambulance. Some of the contents include: a tourniquet, dog friendly hemostatic dressings, pressure dressing, epinephrine for allergic reaction, syringes, narcan, gravol, & something for pain. I also carry a steroid for treating doggy breathing problems & something to keep her calm & feel better if she gets sick. Standard stuff in my mind! 9. Navigation- well that’s usually up to me but Charlie has a great nose & some awesome K-9 ears if we do get lost! She can track our way out easily. 10. Communications- also up to me! I always have a way to communicate if I need it! Charlie can bark if she wants to tell me something really important but the space we save in her pack from this stuff we use for extra food, some spare batteries & doggy treats. 11. Bonus we carry between us: poop pick up bags, Burt’s bee lip chap, electrolytes, electrical tape & of course a go pro camera! + season/sport specific a PFD on boat & for swiftwater rescue!

. 🔊 Public Safety Announcement‼️ . The ‘Labour Day Long Weekend ’ is about celebrating with one last summer adventure, your investment in ‘trip safety’ can mean the difference between a successful outcome & becoming a statistic. . “What can YOU do?” . 1. Plan your trip/file a trip plan – SAR will locate you faster, often resulting you being in better condition. 2. Check in with ‘yourself’ – are you (and your group, including dogs) physically and mentally capable of this activity? 3. Can you spend the night if necessary? Taking essentials + seasonal and sport specific gear is highly recommended. . #publicsafetyannouncement #linkinbio #knowbeforeyougo #bcadventuresmart #reduceincidents #bcsar #labourday2019 #longweekend #pnw #tripplan #train #takeessentials

TRIP PLANS work! 📝 📲 No one ever expects to get into trouble outdoors. But, a turn in the weather, mistake in judgment, unexpected injury (people or dog) or equipment failure can quickly change any recreational outing into a crisis. 📝 📲 Hiker helped @coquitlamsar find him. Full story on our FB & Twitter. 📝 📲 “He also left a plan of where he was going, and his wife had that, and contacted us when we got his co-ordinates, so we knew exactly where he was, so that limits the huge search area down to a smaller area," Coquitlam SAR said. 📝 📲 ‼️ “Plus, he was prepared to spend the night!” . . #tripplan #hewasprepared #coquitlamsar #bcsar #bchydro #buntzenlake #essentials #takeessentials #bcadventuresmart #dogsofsar #bernesemountaindogs #hiker
