I am feeling a deep appreciation for those around me who are working to make FOLKLIFE a reality. I call myself a jack of all trades. Im a quantity over quality person (even in food). I can do everything well, but not great. What this means is that I need talent around me. People who are quality and not quantity. I am good at finding talent, and this team—it takes an island— is my talent. They tell me “no” when I do something subpar, and they redo it themselves. Fortunately, I take criticism well. I can’t even imagine what FOLKLIFE would be like without them. I know it’d still happen, and still be done well, but not GREAT. Boy, how I love this FOLKLIFE family. -Alina, FOLKLIFE Publisher . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 📸 @deeprootsfarms . #folklifemagazine #folklife #publisher #magscanada #magazinepublisher #magazine #teamwork #islanders #island #islandtime #gabriolaisland @deeprootsfarm @margygi @patoubelanger #appreciation @_hilary_masson_ #ittakesavillage #ittakesanisland #quantityoverquality #qualityoverquantity #newbusiness #girlboss #newmagazine #canadianmagazine #westcoast #gulfislands #generosity #westcoastbestcoast #bless #thankful

ALL HANDS AND HEARTS NEEDS ST. JOHN'S HELP. They are currently committed to being on island until the end of June but only have their housing until April 30. Can someone help with housing for May and June? There are 30-35 staff and volunteers. They have generators and cisterns and the Westin has donated drinking water so what they need is space. Ideally they are looking for a building but they are happy to camp. They do have a grant from AirBnB so they could offer compensation. If you can help, please contact Ki -- (508) 317-2779 GHS cannot thank  @allhandsandhearts enough for the help they gave us in getting ready for this school year! 🌴🙏 #ittakesanisland #communitymatters

“Breaking Ground" on the new Walk-in Cooler project You may have noticed something different on the Prune Alley side of the Co-op. On Monday, March 4th, the part of the pergola was deconstructed and removed to make room for an 8' x 15' Walk-in Cooler, which will be installed later this spring. The work was done by Ken Katz, Board President, along with Co-op Members Keegan Cooksten and Jim Parker. The new Walk-in is expected to be installed sometime in May and will essentially double our total walk-in cooler space. This will improve safety in the existing cooler by getting product out of the aisles and allow us more flexibility in product sourcing, including expansion of local sourcing, aggregation, and special orders that require refrigeration. #orcasisland #coops #localresilience #orcasfoodcoop #ittakesanisland #gocoop

🖤"It takes a village to raise a child."🖤 🖤I think about this and apply to myself being that I am a mother of a young 2.5 year old right now. When I see other mothers and fathers out and about with their kids and observe them struggling to keep the kids in line, my heart really goes out to them. My thoughts are much different now than they were before. 🖤When you see someone struggling with their child out in public, ask yourself, "Is there something I can do to help him/her?" If not, try to fix the look on your face and just smile away them as a way of showing that you understand that they are trying their best. We could all use a little positivity and a little more help in our lives. 🖤 I know I'd be so thankful if my Island people helped me raise my child with love because it really does take an Island along with a lot of prayers to, not only raise a child but to raise a good and respectful child.🖤 • • • • • • • #IslandHeartbeat #itsislandtime #islandvibes #ittakesanisland #islandpeople #islandkids #raisingourfuturetheislandway #islandoffspring

I’ve taken a couple months off work to be with the kids while my partner is across the globe. Going from one extreme, holiday production and shows, to the opposite, slow days spent with the children doing crafts and making train tracks... it’s taken me on a rollercoaster of emotions. I’m grateful for the island of support that shows up, the meals, the town trips, the play dates and occasional sleepover. Makes this mama feel less isolated and able to tackle four under four. I’m also itching to get back to the wheel.... #blackbirdstudios #gabriolaisland #islandlife #doubletwins #fourunderfour #soloparenting #ittakesanisland #aeon #slowlife #mygreatadventure

Happy New Year guys and a heart felt thank you for all your support in 2018. It's been an amazing year where we have met so many inspiring and passionate people. We are happy that the island's environmental needs are finally being prioritised and are so proud to be part of the collaborative vision of @plasticfreeibiza. The island is so lucky to have so many good people supporting it. We have partnered many businesses over the year who are working their hardest on putting environmental sustainability at the heart of their agenda. There is of course so much more to do. Things can move frustratingly slowly, there are U turns and changes in advice that even we struggle to keep up with but we remain positive and keep the fight going. So whether you want to end #plasticpollution #animalsuffering or any other cause on the island then stay tuned, get in touch or join the team. We will continue to unite our community, amplifying and giving voice to these incredibly important issues and causes. We will continue our work with @plasticfreeibiza which has great plans for 2019. A huge thank you to the LIN team @analuiphotography @myibizaandformentera @officialibizawedding @drewerness for their efforts and to every other organisation, NGO, charity, business and inspirational person who gives up their time for the stuff that matters. We hope 2019 is a wonderful year for you and for these beautiful islands we call home. #happynewyear #loveibizanow #plasticfreeibiza #ittakesanisland ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ ✨ Que gran año! #ibizasinplastico #ibizenco #islaibiza

Grateful for our extraordinary GHS community! Thank you to Andrea Milam and everyone else who contributed! 🌴 #ittakesanisland #Repost @stjangels ・・・ Two weeks ago, @giffthillschool approached us for support in delivering meals to ten senior residents for Christmas. The School typically would give meals to mourning loved ones in the event of a loss, but Tracy Andersen's family asked for meals to be given where needed in the community instead. So, GHS gathered donations, @andrea.milam asked us to help coordinate, and we called DJ at @northshoredeli who agreed to make Christmas dinners for ten of our senior clients. This afternoon, our Disaster Case Manager, Catikawa Richardson and Andrea Milam delivered roasted turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and brussels sprouts to ten seniors island-wide in loving memory of @beachgurldesigns , Tracy Andersen. Thank you to all involved in this beautiful Christmas gesture, especially Marleigh and Stan Andersen! ❤🎄🎅 #twelvedaysofkindness

At Orcas Food Co-op we LOVE our Volunteers! Orcas Food Co-op is grateful for the enthusiasm and support of all our volunteers. We recently sat down with Tiffany Loney and asked her why she likes to volunteer at the Co-op. "I love putting my energy into projects where everybody gains something positive. The co-op is a happy place where everyone involved is sharing the benefits equally. It is a great business model. As a volunteer I am working with people who are active in making changes and choices. We are collectively striving for "better" and that gives me hope in humanity and it's fun! Good people and good food = good life." - Tiffany Loney Be sure to check out Tiffany Loney, Dancer and Choreographer extraordinaire, in her next dance performance in The Roasted Nut at Orcas Center this weekend! Thank you Tiffany for all of the help that you provide on freight day every Tuesday! #gocoop #coopvolunteers #ittakesanisland #strongertogether #sustainabilityleader #sustainablesanjuans #coops4kindness
